What to prewire in a fire rebuild
A checklist of low voltage wiring to plan before drywall, so your rebuilt home is ready for cameras, Wi-Fi, and smart control.
Why prewire matters
Running cable while the walls are open costs far less than adding it later. A few hours of planning with your builder can save thousands and avoid visible wires after move-in.
The essentials
Cat6 to every room and TV location, to each Wi-Fi access point in the ceiling, and to every camera location outside. Plan a central network closet with power, ventilation, and space for a rack.
Easy to forget
Wiring for keypads, motorized shades, in-ceiling and outdoor speakers, the gate and intercom, the garage, the pool equipment, and a conduit to any guest house or detached building.
Plan for outages
Include a dedicated circuit and space for battery backup in the network closet, and a path for a backup internet connection such as Starlink, so cameras and the gate keep working during power shutoffs.
