Wired vs. wireless security cameras for large homes

Why most estates and businesses get better results from wired cameras, and where wireless still makes sense.

The short answer

For a large home or a business, wired cameras are usually the better choice. One cable carries both power and data, so there are no batteries to charge and no Wi-Fi drops during the moment that matters.

Where wireless cameras struggle

Battery cameras often sleep until they detect motion, which can miss the first seconds of an event. Thick walls, long driveways, and detached buildings also weaken Wi-Fi, so footage can stutter or drop.

Where wireless still works

A wireless camera can be a good fit for a spot where running cable is impossible, such as a rented space or a temporary construction site. We often mix one or two of these into an otherwise wired system.

What we recommend

Wired cameras for the perimeter, driveway, gate, and entries, recording to a private recorder on the property, with cloud backup for the most important cameras. You watch everything in one app on your phone.
